Brief Method Summary
Fluoride ion reacts with the red cerous chelate of alizarin complexone which is determined by automated colorimetry. |
Scope and Application
This automated method determines fluoride in drinking, surface and saline waters; domestic and industrial wastes. |
Applicable Concentration Range
0.05 - 1.5 mg/L |
Interferences
Aluminum interference (aluminum forms a complex with fluoride) can be eliminated by treating the sample with 8-hydroxyquinoline (to complex aluminum) and extraction with chloroform. At aluminum levels below 0.2 mg/L, the extraction procedure is not required. |
Quality Control Requirements
None. |
Sample Handling
No special requirements. |
Maximum Holding Time
28 days (MCAWW, Table 1). |
Relative Cost
Less than $50 |
