Citation
Methods for the Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes (MCAWW) (EPA/600/4-79/020)
Brief Method Summary
Fluoride ion reacts with the red cerous chelate of alizarin complexone which is determined by automated colorimetry.
Scope and Application
This automated method determines fluoride in drinking, surface and saline waters; domestic and industrial wastes.
Applicable Concentration Range
0.05 - 1.5 mg/L
Interferences
Aluminum interference (aluminum forms a complex with fluoride) can be eliminated by treating the sample with 8-hydroxyquinoline (to complex aluminum) and extraction with chloroform. At aluminum levels below 0.2 mg/L, the extraction procedure is not required.
Quality Control Requirements
None.
Sample Handling
No special requirements.
Maximum Holding Time
28 days (MCAWW, Table 1).
Relative Cost
Less than $50
